Community Litter Pick Reminder!

Hello Everyone,

Some sun at long last!

May I politely remind you all, it is our community litter pick this coming Sunday (12th).

Meet outside the Village Hall/Nelson’s at 12 noon where Roger will hand out all the litter picking equipment and get things organised in my absence (thank you Roger!).

Afterwards, well earned refreshments can be taken in Nelson’s! The garden is wonderful when the sun is out so, why not enjoy a drink and a pizza in this lovely community hub!

Please try and encourage as many people as possible – your neighbours and friends etc. to join this inaugural Hooley community litter pick (you will probably recall, our first attempt at a community litter pick on 29th October 2023, had to be cancelled due to atrocious weather!). Hopefully, we will then build an ‘army’ of litter pickers who, will randomly pick litter in their ‘close-to-home’ vicinity which, will result in a tidier Hooley and help to ‘Make Hooley a Better Place to Live’!

Best wishes and thank you,

Jerry

HOOLEY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION, COMMUNITY LITTER PICK INSTRUCTIONS

  • Litter picking by the side of roads must be carried out with extreme caution, due to the risk of passing vehicles. Only litter pick where there are wide verges or, pavements and face oncoming traffic. It is essential that you are visible to road users and therefore, you must only carry out this activity if you have and wear a hi-visibility jacket, and only do litter picking in clear daylight.
  • Use litter pickers to prevent constant bending and stretching and wear safety gloves.
  • Do not attempt to remove litter from the actual road.
  • Make sure an item is safe to handle with no sharp edges or, possible noxious contents.
  • Avoid reaching into hedges or, undergrowth in such a way as to expose your face, eyes and skin to scratches from thorns or, branches. If you cannot reach an item with your litter picker, then leave it!
  • Avoid working on steep slopes where there is an increased risk of falls and slips. When you are working close to ditches, avoid reaching into the ditch to remove litter unless it can be safely reached with your litter picker.
  • Be aware of wildlife. Avoid disturbing animals and birds that may be nesting in the spring, and avoid wasp and bee nests in the summer. Do not disturb animals or, damage plants. Do not remove ‘natural’ rubbish like logs, stones and weeds – they can be home to animals and insects. Do not try and release any entangled animals; call the RSPCA if you come across any; 0300 1234 999. Do not attempt to remove dead or live animals.
  • Do not enter an area, or attempt to litter pick in areas where works restrict picking, or where works are already in place or, where the public do not have a right of entry.
  • Please place all collected litter in the purple sacks you have been issued with. Rubbish should not be compressed using hands or, feet as this can accidently puncture the skin!
  • Do not overfill bin bags and avoid lifting heavy objects or, sacks on your own.
  • Tie the bag at the top and leave by the side of the road in a safe location, preferably next to an existing litter bin.

STAY SAFE and ENJOY YOURSELF!

  1. A huge thank you to everyone who turned up and volunteered to tidy up Hooley on Sunday 12th May, our village looks much better as a result!
Litter picking equipment and personal safety items have now been distributed to various residents who, can go and litter pick at their own convenience!
If you would like to join the Hooley litter picking team, please let us know and we will get equipment to you.
    Thank you.
